Reflection on You.com

Creating a digital portfolio wasn’t an easy task for me at all.  First finding a site that I found not only appealing but also easy to navigate was the key.  Second, I wasn’t sure what I wanted the site to portray.  Third, where was I going to get all of the things I have done at the conclusion of my 4th Wilkes graduate class?

I finally settled on using Wix.com.  This was a great choice it had several options to display my site, which I loved.  Wix was also very user friendly site to access and to create.  I had no difficulty link websites, adding images and text throughout.  I would highly recommend Wix to anyone who is first creating a website for any purpose.

What did I want to include on my website was a difficult task for me overall?  I personally don’t like to give out too much personal information on the Internet whenever possible.  Especially when that information can be accessed publically by anyone.  So, I went with keeping my site professional based on works I have completed in my graduate course as well as some help things I use regularly within my math classes I teach.

Finally, my biggest challenge was compiling as many of my works I had completed as possible.  Unfortunately, I haven’t been very organized in keeping these items in a central location.  This project has forced me to take most of these pieces I have created and organize them and also give me a central location at which to access them for the future.

In the end, this project has been very useful and rewarding to me educationally.  I always look for ways in my graduate courses to have works that I can use in the future.  This project is another example of something I will get great use out of in the future.

(u06a2) Broadcast Yourself (due Sun)

Creating a live broadcast can be something that isn’t as easy as it might seem.  Time management, getting viewers, understanding the functioning of the broadcasting tools you’re using require time and effort.  In the end the results were very satisfying and I will definitely use this as a way to communicate in the future.

First, I had to choose what type of broadcasting site I wanted to use.  This wasn’t the easiest task; there were so many options of free sites.  All of which had their own unique features and ways that made them appealing.  I finally settled on using “Instant Presenter”, because it was something I watched another Webinar on and it was very user friendly to me as the viewer.

One of my biggest challenges was to be able to coordinate with people over the holiday break on a time to view my Webinar.  Unfortunately I was only able to recruit two people, but as my professor suggested I recorded both video and audio to make things more realistic.  It truly does make you more anxious when people can actually see what you’re doing.  Especially the transitioning from slide to slide and/or screen to screen.  This particular site was very easy to use and didn’t have many challenges technically for me other than finding where they kept my recording after the Webinar was complete.  This is located at the bottom of this blog.  My largest challenge was just not to be too nervous and not to stumble over my words too often.  Even with some practice, I found myself stumbling over certain parts of my presentation.

Overall, I would recommend creating a Webinar to anyone that has something they would like to convey to a large population or even a small group that may not be able to meet at a specific time.  I do plan as I said in my Webinar to use this as a way to record myself for our annual open house and attach it to an email for parents.  I think it’s important for all parent to get to meet the teacher and not all of them are able to do so with their busy schedules.
