(u06a1) Attend a Live Webinar

Attend a live Webinar – Adaptive Learning Webinar

Discussion points:
  • What were the strengths and weaknesses of the show format?
  • Would you participate in future shows of this nature?
  • How could this type of webcast be incorporated into the classroom?
  • How might you use it with students?  As attendees or broadcasters?

What were the strengths?
Very clear and concise
Gave housekeeping tips
Based on research
Power point to follow along
Continuing education certificate
Question and answer session following the lecture
Having a facilitator to help with Q & A
Posting the questions for us to view as a group

What were the weaknesses?
A bit choppy and the individuals were nervous, but the message was good
They went through the slides very quickly and it was difficult for me to take notes or screen shot
It was more so a statistical type of webinar, I was hoping for a more informative.
Lag in sounds
Lost sound several times

Would you participate in future shows?
Absolutely, it was very informative and easy to follow and access overall.

How could this be incorporated in the classroom?
-          Projects, Class elections, student collaboration across classrooms and across curriculum
-          Teachers could leave Webinar based lesson to watch when they are unable to be in class (planned absence)

How might you use it with students as attendees or broadcasters?
Students could broad cast election, students could attend additional extension or remediation lesson based on needs, parents could access, Webinar could be recorded and accessed whenever there is some confusion.  Students that are out for extended times could use this as a means for their education.

(u05a2) Integrating Social Networking

In thinking about this assignment for quite some time, I had to weigh in several options.  First, I am obligated by district policy to not have personal social media connections to my students.  In looking through Untangling the Web I came across several good social media options.  However, I need one that fits my limited time after school hours that I can do in my home with my children present and carrying on as they frequently do in the evening hours.  That energetic bunch I have each evening.  I choose to use Todays Meet to communicate on the mathematics unit I am teaching and to provide last minute opportunities for parents and students to ask questions.  I liked that it is similar to that of an instant messenger, but it is individualized for a specific time period and I could easily post it to my district page for parents to be aware and access. My one disappointment was that it didn’t have an app version to make things even more accessible.

The unit: Chapter 6 Test (Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying, Dividing Integers and Coordinate Plan)
Project:
1.     Post two questions you have in regards to the current unit (Chapter 6).  Something you didn’t understand something you need clarification for prior to the test on Friday!

2.    Post one example problem that you created on your own.

Goals:

1.    Incorporate social media (Today’s Meet) as a means to collaborate and communicate with peers on the unit topic.

2.    Uses as a way to have the students communicate their difficulties.

3.    Use as  a way for students to input sample problems to demonstrate understanding of the content

Objectives:

1.    Students will be able to solve all Integer related problems.

2.    Students will be able to correctly graph positive and negative coordinates on a coordinate plane.

Evaluation:

1.    Students will need to access at least two times during the allotted time frame to discuss questions they had about the unit.  This will count as two homework grades for the quarter.

2.    Students will also need to access the site one additional time to post a sample problem based on the unit content, to count as one more homework assignment for the quarter.

Reflection:

In order to ensure success with this assignment, I first scaffold a worksheet to help the students guide their questions.  Upon completion of the worksheet with their questions and example they were then able access the website within my classroom via IPads or complete that portion at home.  This was the first time I implemented such a project and having them get access within my classroom was vital.  The student population I have doesn’t complete much of any homework at home and this I feared would have been much of the same thing.  However, I do feel that they enjoyed the project and were very eager to begin.  The quality of their work could have been better and in the future I will likely use this site as a means for students to ask questions prior to an exam.  It an excellent way to put a question, response out there for all to see and answer.
